The David Letterman Scandal

Apparently there are a lot of people that are seeking information about David Letterman and are digging through posts to find info about the latest and greatest on the recent Letterman sex scandal.  So this post will help to inform you and should serve you well to give you a brief synopsis so that you know what you’re talking about at the water cooler.  david-letterman-scandal

David Letterman announced on October 1 via Late Night with David Letterman that he was being extorted from for 2 million dollars by 51 year old ex-CBS news producer Robert Halderman.  Halderman accused Dave of having affairs with past staffers and supplied proof of the accusations.  Letterman admitted to the accusations on the show.    To date, only two staffers have been revealed and included Holly Hester and another named Stephanie Birkitt.  Halderman dated Birkitt, 34 and lived with her in Connecticut for 4 years.

stephanie-birkittDuring that 4 years, Halderman found a diary of Birkitt’s that revealed the details of an affair between her and Letterman.  A few weeks ago Halderman took that information and put together a package detailing all of the things he had found out about Letterman and threatened to write a screenplay and a book about the “terrible things” Letterman had done.  He put the package in the back of Letterman’s car.   In the package, Halderman demanded 2 million dollars, but did not provide any guarantee that the screenplay/book would not be written in exchange for the money.

TV Letterman ExtortionOver the period of 3 meetings with Halderman, Letterman’s attorney and law enforcement provided Halderman with a fake 2 million dollar check.  Halderman took the check to the bank to deposit it and was then arrested.  He pleaded not guilty and is currently walking free on a $200,000 bail.  His attorney says that there is much more to the story, but none of which has been revealed yet.  If convicted, Halderman could face up to 15 years in prison.

The last I spoke of David Letterman was to announce the wedding and his new marriage to his long time partner Regina Lasko on the blog post here.  Since their private wedding, this was quite a bombshell to start this new marriage.  Mrs. Letterman is obviously crushed and according to Letterman, “She has been horribly hurt by my behaviour, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it,” he said.

david-letterman-regina-lasko“And at that point, there’s only two things that can happen: either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed. So let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.”

We wish the best for David and Regina and we’re sure they’ll get through it. When you get to a certain star status like Letterman has, you certainly have to assume that there are going to be some improprieties. Especially since he was a single, famous, rich man which some deemed the King of New York.

Some will argue that he wasn’t married when the “terrible things” happened so it’s not an affair and others will say that he was with Regina for years when it occurred, so it most definitely was.  What do you say?

Affair, shmaffair! The bigger question is whether or not he created a hostile work environment for the women working on his television show. Here’s an interesting confessional from one of his former writers, which suggests that Letterman did create a hostile culture for women who thought they might lose their jobs, or at least lose out on promotions, if they didn’t sleep with him.

Everyone’s morality is different, but for my part – and I don’t judge him on this because he is entitled to his own morality too – I do think his sexual escapades constitute “affairs” or “scandals.” I don’t think marriage is the absolute prerequisite for monogamy if that’s what you pledge to the person you are sleeping with regularly.
